The EEPROMs in the R100 do go bad and you will get the checksum error. The computer MUST be a 286 at 10 megahertz OR slower to work properly with the RSS program.
Also there is an error in the programming cable that 'may' cause problems. Change the two 2.2K resistors to 4.7K to better match the serial port on the computer.
