My VX5R handheld does AM over much/most? of it's receive coverage. So does my Icom IC2350 mobile rig. The aircraft band should work well, but there's nothing magical or special about sniffing for noise there. I like to work near where my portable beams work properly (in the ham bands) with predictable patterns when tracing down noise, so I use empty channels within 2M and 70cm, listening on AM. I've often found it useful to move to 70cm as you get closer to the source because it is easier to get a good bearing on the noise. Laryn K8TVZ
