You might want to sweep the antenna with an MFJ antenna analyzer or something
similar. That will tell the story.

GM Richard - mni tks for the response.
Unfortunately, it does not have radials however there is (separate from
the antenna in a
box of other stuff) a collar with 3 radials (fitting your description
for VHF) however I'm
not even sure if they are for this antenna (there were 8-10 assorted
VHF/UHF antennas
found in the attic of his place and this is what I'm dealing with). To
get exact info, I'd
have to go to a seance as my rig doesn't have the range to QSO Heaven
(or maybe the
        other place) - hi
Another responder this morning suggested a model number and I'm
gonna hit Google
with that (you'd be surprised the number of hits you get using only
"Antenna Specialists
Co" - most were dealers) since if I can see a picture (in a catalog) it
would help.
I plan to borrow #1 son's digital camera and in near future plan to
post a pix if I still
        need it.
           Again, tks for the input

          Hi Walt,

Measure the radials of the ground plane, that might get you close.
If there near about 6 inches then its UHF, if they are near around 15 to 18
then it would be in the VHF rage. But a picture could help some one spot it
right away.

          Regards

          -Richard

Am assisting in an estate (I'm an oldie that works CW on 160m so this
is stuff is strange to me). Anyway, there is an antenna in the mess that we
cannot identify. The SK was DEEP into VHF & UHF (ran 2 repeaters just for him
and XYL) so feel it is in that range.
Heres the poop: (at least all we know):
Total length: 11'6" LOA, of which
          9' 6" is about 1/2"-5/8"OD fiberglass and
2' is a metal sleeve (where I would think a clamp to a mast would
          go.
Its fed at the bottom by coax
Only ID info on it is that is made by Antenna Specialists Co (can't
          find anything online on them)
There is a possibility that in the lower area there might be a metal
collar with 3 horizontal radials (ground plane)(such a gadget has
turned up but we don't know where it belongs).
Any help you guys can render will be greatly appreciated (especially
any URL links to a picture catalog, freq's it covers, power rating,
etc
          73
