As I think about it more, I'm seeing that it depends on how the switching supplies are designed. In general terms, cheapest supplies have power factors farthest from one. Well-designed units (more expensive) would be closer to one. So my earlier generalization wasn't really fair. I wonder what will happen to our power systems as we add all these "energy saving" light bulbs with the absolute-minimum-parts-count switching supplies built-in?
