It is indeed! > The only reason he did not try it with Replicant was that Replicant does > not run on any hardware without modem. That's not the case anymore, we support two tablets that do not have a modem: the Wi-Fi versions of the Galaxy Tab 2 7" and 10.1" (p3110 and p5110). However, I agree it would be beneficial to support more of those, especially ones running with free bootloaders. > Now, would it be possible to disable the modem (maybe with a solder > iron) on one of the Replicant Samsung devices? And maybe attach one via > USB? On Samsung devices that we support, the modem's system has to be loaded to the chip by Replicant, so we can very easily disable it. I plan on providing instructions for that on our wiki, but as usual, I fell behind. If you're interested, I can try and send some draft here. It's all about either disabling the ril-daemon service, rild binary or removing the libsamsung-ril.so library (all those are equivalent). In addition, it would be useful to provide a quick and dirty way to turn the modem off (as well as we can) from the user interface. This looks dead easy to implement. -- Paul Kocialkowski, Replicant developer Replicant is a fully free Android distribution running on several devices, a free software mobile operating system putting the emphasis on freedom and privacy/security.
