I've tried to pay attention to most discussions in the Replicant universe for a while and I haven't really heard much chatter about building a brand new phone that can run Replicant.
The current work suggests to me that the endgame is to have a relatively bug free Replicant 6.0, with a mainline kernel, on an LG Optimus Black that uses U-boot instead of a proprietary bootloader. Bonus points if we can get 3d graphics acceleration with mesa/llvmpipe and easy to use Wifi via OTG cable. If this were to all work, I don't think building a new phone would be necessary, because this Optimus Black phone would be dope! That said, I could see such a phone becoming a prototype or proof of concept for entrepreneurs that would like to take the gamble of making a brand new phone that is all free software. Bunnie Huang wrote the book on the subject of hardware sourcing in China. Could anyone go to Shenzhen and get some quotes for how much it'd cost to manufacture some Replicant phones? Here's some research and how-to guides on what to do when you get there: https://boingboing.net/2016/02/04/bunnie-huangs-essential-gu.html http://www.wired.co.uk/video/shenzhen-episode-1 In Solidarity, Kurtis Allan Mwenda: > I made a forum post on this topic here > http://redmine.replicant.us/boards/27/topics/13950 > Wanted to discuss if at all it is possible to do this? > > > > _______________________________________________ > Replicant mailing list > Replicant@lists.osuosl.org > http://lists.osuosl.org/mailman/listinfo/replicant > _______________________________________________ Replicant mailing list Replicant@lists.osuosl.org http://lists.osuosl.org/mailman/listinfo/replicant
