The issue here is that Linux uses its firmware loading mechanism to load data to the device, or even the kernel, regardless of if that data is code or configuration data, so it's not always easy to know what is being loaded. The thread you pointed to also points to a free software application to generate this firmware. That device looks interesting for the future as the modem is probably already supported by oFono and upstream kernel. It would also be interesting to watch the progress of this device as it has the same GPS chip (The BCM4751) than many of the smartphones and tablets supported by Replicant. BTW, does someone already check if there is/was some documentation on that chip on Cypress website, or if someone asked Cypress for it? Denis.
