Not sure about replicant 4-2, but I've been trying to do this for years with the Cyanogenmod version of android 4.2.2. No success so far. I have an old galaxy S with Android 4.2.2 (CyanogenMod) and I asked way back on Mon, 8 Mar 2021 21:28:44 with Subject: SMSBackup+ claims "There were no items to backup" evan after reset. And then on Thu, 4 Aug 2022 21:01:07 with Subject: Still trying to backup sms and call logs... I did get a reply to this last one: "I had success with Slight Backup (com.shardschuh.slight backup)." But that didn't work for me. I have tried all the backup/restore apps I could find, including the Samsung app SMS Import/Export (the new phone is a galaxy S6) but they all fail at some point. This latter one can't get to the old sms/mms messages. The furthest I got was copying out the db files with adb (the old phone is rooted) and then with sqlite3 on debian I was able to select one or another text, so the data are there but there are differences in the DB schemas that require manual changes in order to re-import all the sms and mms (along with the asssociated pictures) into the new format and I got discouraged.
