A collegue of mine just tried to file a bugreport using reportbug. He
was asked in which mode reportbug should run, and he chose "novice".
After that, reportbug started asking question he (as a novice linux
user) really couldn't answer, like whether or not he had installed an
SMTP server and what his ISP's mailserver is.
I'm not sure whether there's an easy way of detecting this
automagically. Maybe the installer should ask about the mailserver
and write it to a config file somewhere?

Hello,
any MUA will ask for the smtp/pop3/imap server, and any users must
know them to properly configure the program, the same applies to
reportbug. Given there is no way to reliably detect the user
MTA/smtphost, I'm closing this report (that's tagged 'wontfix' since
some time now)
