But to be realistic: the only mail servers where non-authenticated and non-encrypted connections are useful/not-careless are mail servers @localhost (roughly speaking).
And I suppose ISPs support encrypted connections in addition to plaintext if they actually "serve n customers" with n>1. Cheers, Axel
