There is a known issue with OSX Snow Leopard and compiling python...

I just tripped on it when building a fresh python 2.5.

My workaround is to stick with a 2.4.4 version that was already installed.

However, when running

% ../bin/python develop

I got this message ...

An optional code optimization (C extension) could not be compiled.

Optimizations for this package will not be available!

command 'gcc' failed with exit status 1

It looks as if there are several things to fix after going to 64-bit. If you don't need to rock your boat, avoid fresh installs until things are stable again.
