Keep troubleshooting it... push the issue upstream and/or put it on the back burner... haven't found anything really informative yet. linux 4.11 works with haveged, but not with USB or eMMC (where the rootfs is). Kernel 4.12-rc2/rc3 work fine with rootfs, but down't work with haveged...
