I can't sponsor you.  However, you should be aware that this limitation 
is also present in NIS, and "fixing" it might not work for NIS.  The 
reason is that NIS uses dbm as its backing store, which has a 1024 char 
limit on record sizes.  This might actually be reflected in the NIS 
protocol itself as well -- it would be worth looking into.
