As Administrator you can't edit preferences for a user with dot in name.  
There's a
validation on user-name-field that said only letters, numbers and  
undescores allowed.

But you can register users with dots in name like steffen described.

That's somewhat inconsistent.

I prefere the firstname.lastname pattern for our group of developers and  
would like
to see it fixed.

Reopen that case or make a new one?
