Do not export these two methods. In fact, these are only called from unit
tests, so I suggest that you move them to `application_test.go` (see examples
like `addPlaceholderDataWithLocking()`, `handleApplicationEventWithLocking()`).
Obviously `enableAppStateEvent` must stay as a struct member.
