"Training Journalism for the New Media Environment" International Summer School for Junior Faculty in Journalism
Dates: July 7 - July 19, 2008 Organizer: International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) - Armenian Branch Host Institution/ Location: Armenian School of Journalism at Journalism Department of Yerevan State University , Yerevan , Armenia Funding: Higher Education Support Program (HESP) of Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation - Armenia Eligibility Applicants must be: Ø Below the age of 35; Ø Fully employed by a university (teaching in the fields of Journalism, Media Studies, Communications) and/or PhD student Ø Committed to an academic career in journalism education Region/Countries: NIS , Eastern European and Central Asia countries Applications should include a detailed CV and an essay, describing the applicants' ideas about transformation of journalism profession in the new media environment and the challenges journalism education faces. Participants Number of participants is 18-21 from both state and private journalism schools of Armenia and eligible countries. Language(s): English and Armenian (translation from/to English will be provided). The goal of "Training Journalism for the New Media Environment" Summer School for Junior Faculty in Journalism is to raise professional skills of young journalism educators on new media and methods of application of the new media in the process of teaching journalism. The objectives of the program are: Ø To provide young educators from journalism schools in Armenia and the listed countries with a deeper knowledge on the transformation of the journalism profession and mass media system in the scope of technological evolution, as well as new challenges brought by the convergence and digitalization of the news industry; Ø To train the young faculty in modern effective teaching methods based on the use of innovative new media technologies and digital equipment in journalism education; Ø To assist young faculty in application of new media in courses they teach, as well as updating syllabi with specific classroom work elements and student assignments that involve active use of technologies; Ø To create a network of young faculty in journalism able to foster use of new media in journalism education with the goal to prepare the students for technologically rapidly developing media environment in the region.
