I'd chalk all that up to things not having been updated to reflect the
change yet, and the yum plugin reusing a lot of the up2date code (the
plugin glues the RHN python backend code into yum).

Red Hat appear to be switching to using yum for all RPM installation
work that requires dep-solving. If you weren't aware, Fedora Core 5, 6
and RHEL5's anaconda installer use yum as an installation backend.

Might be worth bugzilla'ing the rhn-profile-sync error message ;-)
