I haven't heard anyone disagree with that sentiment. But having exec
the default mount option for removable media doesn't cause anything to
run. How about we make nouser the default too so there is a third hoop
a user needs to hop through to get something he has carefully
considered and wants to execute from a CD to run?

We all understand your dislike of autorun. We don't all understand why
Red Hat has decided to change the default mount options assuming that
is what they have decided to do. Perhaps they will enlighten us at
some point.
