Red Hat is pleased to announce the availability of the *beta*
release of 5.1 (kernel-2.6.18-36.el5) for the Red Hat Enterprise
Linux 5 family of products including:
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Advanced Platform for x86,
AMD64/Intel(r) 64, Itanium Processor Family, and IBM POWER
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Server for x86,
AMD64/Intel(r) 64, Itanium Processor Family, IBM POWER,
S/390 and System z
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Desktop for x86, and
AMD64/Intel(r) 64
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.1 is still in development and
therefore the contents of the media kit, the implemented
features, and the supported configurations are subject to change
before the release of the final product. The supplied beta
packages and CD images are intended for testing purposes only.
Remember that this early access software is not supported and
is not intended for production environments. Do not publish any
benchmark or performance results based on this beta release.
Upgrading from beta releases to the GA product will not be
supported. The beta testing period is scheduled to continue
through September 4, 2007.

Installing the Software / Installation Numbers
----------------------------------------------
The ISO images contain the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 core and
optional components. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 requires users
to enter an Installation Number that guides the Installer to
include the correct components. In the final release, the
Installation Number will be associated with your subscription
entitlement. If you plan to install multiple systems using a
Kickstart file, you can embed an Installation Number in that
Kickstart file.
If an Installation Number is not entered, a core Server or
Desktop will be installed by default. Additional functionality
can be added manually or via RHN at a later time.

Known Issues
------------
The following issues in the beta release are known:
* Bug 249904: Upgrading to RHEL-5 beta channels does not prompt
to install redhat-beta key
When upgrading your Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 system to
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.1 Beta via rhn.redhat.com, the yum
command may not prompt you to import the redhat-beta key. To
work around this issue, it is advised that you import the
redhat-beta key manually, prior to upgrading. This can be
performed by executing the following command:
# rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-redhat-beta
* Bug 247736: install fails when using previous RAID
When performing a software RAID installation, the previous
disk partitioning, may result in an installation failure
while processing the requested partition setup.
* Bug 247853: mount -t gfs fails to load gfs kernel module
The gfs and gfs2 kernel modules are not being loaded at the
time of an initial mount of a gfs or gfs2 file system. This
is caused by an incorrect check in the mount code shared by
gfs and gfs2. This can be observed as:
[testbox]# mount /dev/VolGroup00/testvol /mnt/gfs_test
/sbin/mount.gfs: fs type "gfs" not found in /sys/fs/, is the module
loaded?
This issue is resolved as of gfs2-utils-0.1.30-2.el5 (gfs
uses gfs2 utilities). A simple workaround is to call
"modprobe gfs" (for gfs file systems) and "modprobe gfs2"
(for gfs2 file systems) after reboot and prior to the first
mount of a gfs file system. These commands can be placed in
the /etc/rc.sysinit file, which will then be run at boot time.
A corrected package is available on RHN for upgrading.
* Bug 249076: [RHEL5.1 IA64 Xen] Many systems non-bootable
w/o added kernel param console=tty
Some ia64 boxes fail to boot kernel-xen if they don't have
'console=tty' passed in explicitly. When viewing these
systems via vga, you get as far as seeing
"Uncompressing... done", and then nothing else would be
displayed. Add 'console=tty' to the boot line or for a
permanent solution, to the elilo.conf file.
* Bug 249100: no login prompt on dom0 serial console
When installing Xen on ia64, users may experience device
collision in Xen dom0 when relying on console output over
a serial device.
* Bug 249537: /sbin/weak-modules: line 73: echo: write error:
Broken pipe
Installation of kmod-ipw3945 packages results in a
"Broken pipe" error during weak-modules execution.
Investigation is underway.
* Bug 249601: CD-ROM installation on IBM Power5 bare-metal fails to
find CD-ROM drives
Promise, Marvell, and SiiS PATA drivers are not available
in stage#1 anaconda at this time. Installation on systems
that require these devices to access the installation media
(hard drive, CD-ROM) will not be available. Note that
network installs succeed.
* Bug 249873: system-cdinstall-helper crash
Installing packages from the Supplementary images using
the autorun script located on the root directory of the
ISO will result in a traceback. The recommended
workaround is to use the rpm or yum command to install
packages from the Supplementary images.
* Bug 249855: glibc.i386 conflicts with glibc.i686
Customers testing the IA-32 Execution Layer on 64-bit
Itanium systems should note that both glibc.i386 and
glibc.i686 packages are provided in the Beta. However,
only the glibc.i686 package will be available for Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 5.1 for 64-bit Itanium.
* Bug 249895: xen fails to auto start guests during bootup
Virtualized guests configured to automatically start on
system bootup using the xendomains mechanism do not start.
To workaround this issue, use the xm create command to
start the guests by hand.
* Bug 250139: openhpi pulls in multilib perl
Customers installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.1 Beta for
64-bit IBM POWER may encounter an issue where a 64-bit perl
package is included during installation. The presence of
this package may disrupt normal operation of perl scripts.
To determine if your system is affected, you may execute the
following command:
$ rpm -q --qf "%{name}.%{arch}\n" perl
perl.ppc64
perl.ppc
If both perl.ppc and perl.ppc64 are installed, you may wish
to correct the problem by executing the following commands:
$ rpm -ev --nodeps perl.ppc perl.ppc64
# if system registered to RHN ...
$ yum install perl.ppc
# if DVD or CD-ROM media is available ...
$ yum install /media/cdrom/Server/perl-5.8.8-10.ppc.rpm
