The dmidecode utility can be used even on a vmware virtual guest, to derive useful info about the [virtual] hardware, like this (from an RHEL3 guest):

Handle 0x0001
  DMI type 1, 25 bytes.
  System Information
    Manufacturer: VMware, Inc.
    Product Name: VMware Virtual Platform
    Version: None
    Serial Number: VMware- 6x 5e 01 43 d4 dd nn nn...
    UUID: 564DFF4F-9700-9E67-11D3-B04914BA4CC0
    Wake-up Type: Power Switch

On a xen guest though (RHEL5), dmidecode exits with a failure:

# dmidecode
# dmidecode 2.7
/dev/mem: mmap: Bad address

Is it likely or reasonable to expect dmidecode to work on xen guests in the future?

thanks,
Ed
