I'm puzzled by some behaviour with RHEL5 errata updates.

I've noticed problems on both machines registered to my institution's
satellite server as well as a machine registered on rhn.redhat.com.

Basically, the RHN web interface displays the system as having updates
available, but if you schedule them to apply, when rhn_check runs
(either manually or by rhnsd), it doesn't see that there are new
packages available, says that the latest packages are already installed,
then gives up.

Here's an example. On a system I installed in the last 24 hours from
CDs, after registering there are 37 packages that need updating.

Under "System Status", it says "Updates Available (update now)". I click
on this and it displays all the advisories that apply to the system. I
selected the tzdata update (RHEA-2007:0128) to apply, and confirmed it.
But running rhn_check at the command line produces the following:

-------------
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# rhn_check -v
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Loading "rhnplugin" plugin
Package tzdata - 2006m-2.fc6.noarch already installed and latest version
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]#
-------------

The corresponding entries in /var/log/up2date are as follows:

-------------
[Fri Apr 20 12:41:48 2007] up2date updating login info
[Fri Apr 20 12:41:48 2007] up2date logging into up2date server
[Fri Apr 20 12:41:49 2007] up2date successfully retrieved authentication
token from up2date server
[Fri Apr 20 12:42:01 2007] up2date Adding packages to package profile:
[]
[Fri Apr 20 12:42:01 2007] up2date Removing packages from package
profile: []
-------------

So essentially, nothing gets updated. The RHN web interface shows the
installation event as succeeding, but it also shows that the out-of-date
package has not been upgraded.

However, if I go into the system's Software -> Packages -> Upgrade area
it does show that while package tzdata-2006m-2.fc6 is installed
tzdata-2007d-1.el5 is the latest package. If I manually select it for
upgrade, then run rhn_check, the update works.

-------------
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# rhn_check -v
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Loading "rhnplugin" plugin
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]#
-------------

And the corresponding /var/log/up2date entries:
-------------
[Fri Apr 20 12:46:42 2007] up2date updating login info
[Fri Apr 20 12:46:42 2007] up2date logging into up2date server
[Fri Apr 20 12:46:43 2007] up2date successfully retrieved authentication
token from up2date server
[Fri Apr 20 12:47:15 2007] up2date Adding packages to package profile:
['tzdata-2007d-1.el5']
[Fri Apr 20 12:47:15 2007] up2date Removing packages from package
profile: []
[Fri Apr 20 12:47:19 2007] up2date Updating package profile
-------------

Anybody else seeing this behaviour?

Regards,

Nik
