Some thoughts pop up when I read this:

-  Since you bought RHEL5, wasn't it an option you asked RH for help?

-  Or, even better, post to this list your concrete problems *while*
   doing the job.  IMHO, if you don't manage to do this in one day,
   it's time to ask for help.

-  Is it an option to think that you hired the wrong person?  I can't
   judge his qualities from here, but at least it's not a guarantee
   that "someone with good Linux understanding" (define "good" please)
   can do all the things needed in this case.

-  In the RHEL5 beta stage, I created virtual machines using "virt-inst"
   and it really was a piece of cake, but I must admit having *some*
   background in configuring Xen and in RH(EL) distributions ;-).

-  You don't mention anything about error messages or what didn't work.
   Sounds like you were not able to create a virtual system image at all.
   Is this correct?
