I've noticed this as well. As best I can guess, since RHEL5 is using yum on the backend instead of just rpm, there is an extra layer of "transaction" computation that must happen when doing package selection. In my experience, yum is not very fast to resolve dependencies (but it is very good at it!).

I've also noticed that the package *installation* takes much longer than before. In RHEL3, it takes about 10 minutes to install 4GB of packages. In RHEL5, it takes about an hour to install 7GB of packages. That just ain't right.

I am doing kickstarts against a http server, and
nearly identical install options, I am finding an
install that used to take about 3-5 minutes in RHEL4
total now is taking about 20 because of the very long
package selection phase.


Is there something I am not doing with RHEL5 that
could speed this up?
