My bad. I did notice that my /etc/passwd had x instead of * after I sent the message.

When I generate a password in system-config-kickstart and turn off shadow/md5, the preview shows a line that looks very much like an md5 string.

I'm guessing that this may be a bug. Not that it helps, but if you do use md5 and shadow, the kickstart config of the root password does work.

I have noticed that the kickstart file changed and there are some bugs in anaconda (w.r.t the partitioning) w/ RH5.

Notice in my post I said "I am not using shadow"? In the case that you
don't use shadow passwords, they are stored in /etc/passwd. In addition,
if I *were* using shadow, I believe the entry in /etc/passwd would not
be a '*' it would be a '+'.

The crypted string is grabbed from root's /etc/passwd entry on the
system where I generate the kickstart file - this is done via a script
and has worked with RH8, RH9, RHEL3 and RHEL4.

Thanks,
