I use ntfs-3g (which uses fuse) a _lot_ and I haven't had any problems with it. It's a little slower, I think, but it's reportedly quite solid. I do mostly what you do want to do: read a lot, write a little; sometimes I write quite large files, sometimes very small files. I'm sure I popped a symbolic link in there as well by accident and I think even that worked, which surprised me.
