Are you attempting to use the Synaptics touchpad with just the generic
Xorg "mouse" driver? If so, I strongly suggest you investigate
modifying your system to use the "synapatics" driver for the touchpad.
Without this I find the touchpad to be nearly unusable in Linux. The
synaptics driver allows much finer grain control of the features for you
touchpad and is included as a separate RPM in RHEL5
(synaptics-0.14.4-8.fc6.i386.rpm). Make sure this is installed and
reconfigure your X server to use it. Even though this driver is called
"synaptics" it also works with many alps touchpads as well.

The package also includes a small daemon which can disable the touchpad
when the keyboard is in use to help eliminate accidental movement and
actions while typing. I don't use it but others tell me it works.

Here's a sample config I use with my Dell D820 laptop:

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier "Synaptics"
        Driver "synaptics"
        Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
        Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
        Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"
        Option "LeftEdge" "120"
        Option "RightEdge" "890"
        Option "TopEdge" "120"
        Option "BottomEdge" "650"
        Option "FingerLow" "14"
        Option "FingerHigh" "15"
        Option "MaxTapTime" "0"
        Option "MaxTapMove" "110"
        Option "VertScrollDelta" "50"
        Option "HorizScrollDelta" "50"
        Option "MinSpeed" "0.4"
        Option "MaxSpeed" "1.25"
        Option "AccelFactor" "0.04"
EndSection

There are several GUI's available which allow you to tweak the settings
although I don't know if any of them are included with RHEL5.

Later,
Tom
