Multiple "personal" root logins with a personal password.  I know
the are pros and cons (this does not need to be a server with the
highest security level), but discussions about that are beyond the
scope of my question :-).


Well, it did look a little like an intruder had visited.

Personally, I'd go with sudo. It's behaviour is defined, and it seems the consequences of what you're doing now are erratic, and I'm skeptical that the logs record anything useful about what you're doing.
