For RHEL 5.1Server i386, I've had no problems with either upgrading
from 5.0 nor with a fresh PXE+kickstart install (haven't tried DVD nor
CD install). We use ESX 3.0.2, IIRC.

On a related topic, 5.0 (as well as 4.x, x < 5, IIRC) has a rather
nasty bug/feature causing the LSI mpt scsi driver (the one which is
used by default for ESX guests) to give up after a few timeouts which
apparently occur fairly frequently on any non-trivial I/O load on SAN
arrays, causing fs corruption and remounting the fs as readonly. This
has been fixed in 5.1; I would stay away from 5.0 on ESX for any kind
of production system.
