Almost certainly a DNS-type lookup problem. I know when I've broken
the DNS in some fashion that a login can take an age because something
in the shell's startup is trying to look up a host in the DNS. In my
case the delay typically around 70s, but smaller delays of 5s are not
unusual if just one DNS server in /etc/resolv.conf is unreachable. Of
course, it might not be the DNS, it might be something else, but general
name service lookups are a good place to start.
