why not something simple a la "ping -c2 $FWIP && route del default &&

Could be a solution but firewalls rejects icmp proto (and I can't change
this). One possible solution could be to telnet to another host on
production enviroment, but how can I know if telnet is ok inside a
script launched by crontab??
It is this types of "gotchas" that don't "getcha" when you use standard
things like RIP. Routing Information Protocol. Everything happens
automatically. Not to mention one place to administer.
