Thanks for the reply.
Yea that was the first thing I tried when I realized that I could
remount the drive after logging in. That was my first clue that it was a
timing issue.
The reason I kind of didn't want to use this as a solution was because
this drive holds the vmware virtual machines that this box will host. So
shutting down the box with the current settings in the rc dirs would
have the iscsi drive unmounted before the vms were shutdown.

So that's why I needed to have the start up and shutdown rc scripts
start iscsi first then vmware and on shutdown stop vmware then iscsi.
Otherwise on shutdown the vm's would be left in an inconsistent state
and may become corrupt.
