I would have a look at "man proc". I would make sure that your
filesystems are using the dir_index option. I would read up on elevator
algorithms. In most cases the largest amount of performance gains come
from disk and i/o related tunings. I would also recommend the RH442
course from Red Hat on Systems monitoring and performance tuning.
