Does anyone know of a way to monitor the number of open files on RHEL
5.2 please ?

Just yesterday I added a new plugin to dstat to do just that. I did not release it as part of a new dstat release, but you can get it from subversion:

        http://svn.rpmforge.net/svn/trunk/tools/dstat/

Then something like this should work:

----
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ dstat -tcdp --fs -M topcpu
-----time----- ----total-cpu-usage---- -dsk/total- ---procs--- --filesystem-
-most-expensive-
  date/time |usr sys idl wai hiq siq| read writ|run blk new|files inodes|

Or you can write to a CSV file to plot it in relation to other counters. (I have no plugins yet that get counters from Oracle though)
