Update: after some more Googling found that SI can be related with device
drivers so I disabled one of the NIC's. Now the system is running smooth
with kernel 2.6.18-128.el5 . The disabled NIC is connected to a 1G snifpoint
and a lot of traffic is passing by, never a problem before but it seems this
kernel version has.

NIC: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5704 Gigabit Ethernet
Module used : Broadcom Tigon3 ethernet driver 3.93,
/lib/modules/2.6.18-128.el5/kernel/drivers/net/tg3.ko

Cheers,
Andre
