Hello,
I would like to load RHEL 5 on a Sunfire X4500 server also called a
Thumper and subsequently manage it via my Red Hat satellite server.
BTW, this is not a Sparc architecture machine.
The Sun documentation suggests that this server is certified for RHEL
4 Update 4 only.
My question is anyone running RHEL 5 on one of these Thumpers? Any
info/insight greatly appreciated.
We're running RHEL 5.2 on one of these, and didn't have any
problems, except for determining the NIC enumeration, which was a
bit tricky. (The port labled "NET0" shows during the Anaconda boot/
build process as eth2, and then when booted off of the kernel on
disk, back as eth0. It was kind of tricky, but with console access
and patience, doable.)
Since there is no hardware RAID in this system, we mirrored the boot
disks with software RAID; keep in mind that the only two disks in
the system that are bootable are (as far as rhel is concerned) sdy
and sdac.
Also, you probably want to make sure and update the BIOS, ILOM, and
firmware to the latest levels before you start using the box; we had
some issues on other Thumpers with back-level firmware.
Aside from what I mentioned above, the Thumpers seem to have no
problems that we haven't seen on our other systems running rhel4 and
rhel5 (mainly X4600s, X4200s, X4100s and X2200s.)
Good luck.

Speaking of NIC enumeration... did you ever get the boot interface
parameter worked out with Red Hat? I just got back to work late
December after being out for back surgery... does 5.3 address some of
those issues?
