Hello list,
I would like to get some input and views regarding how to use Redhat
Satellite and manage installations and upgrades in an enterprise
environment.
I think the best place to discuss/ask this would be
https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/rhn-satellite-users
Currently what I do is that whenever there are new versions
of redhat coming out, I make a channel clone and freeze this channel.
The problem is that new packages due to erratas {bug fixes,
enhancements, come in frequently.....From satellite I found a way to add
packages to the channels but is there a way to say "I want to add
these erratas {a collection of packages} to my custom channel.
What's the RHN Satellite version you are running?
I know
that the RedHat updates are binary compatible but there are cases where
I am obliged to stay at RedHat 5.2 for example because some applications
do not certify it. I would like your views about how to manage the park
lifecycle. There would be those who I am sure just choose to make a step
from 5.2 to 5.3 but do you do in between ? Do you deploy security
erratas often or just do a yum install, test and if ok go in prod ?
Also, to start with check out the APIs from your RHN Satellite server as:
http://satellite-fqdn/rhn/rpc/api/
Many thanks for any feedback
