from doing google searches, I found this gem to restore a
pv:
pvcreate --uuid "cqH4SD-VrCw-jMsN-GcwH-omCq-ThpE-dO9KmJ" --restorefile /etc/lvm/backup/vg_04 /dev/sdd1

however, the man page says to 'use with care'. I don't want
to lose data. Can anybody comment on how safe it would be to run this?

Not very safe. I'm no expert, but something is not right with the layout you've described. Your lvm pv's should not have GPT partition labels as you showed in your last mail. I believe parted should report "unrecognised disk label" if you try to print the pv partition table. Showing output from some 5.3 system only confuses the picture, and doesn't support the "problem follows upgrade to rhel 5.4" hypothesis. Be very careful until you're more sure of the layout and the actual problem.
