I don't really have an answer for you, but I wanted to mention that if
you run a non-RHEL kernel, the applications that are only supported on
RHEL may not work or be supported...

Subject: [rhelv5-list] Need reboot=pci boot parameter in RHEL5.4

Hi everyone,

I have to make RHEL5.4 work on the new 22" Apple iMac's and set up a
whole computer lab full of them (~20 machines). My problem is that the
system will hang when rebooting right when the system should reset. To
reset the machine, the power button must be used. I use kickstart to
deploy our machines, so this reboot issue is a deal-breaker.

Through my own testing, I have found that the reboot=pci kernel boot
option will enable reboots to work properly, but that option only exists
in kernels newer than that included in RHEL5.4. I see my options as
patching the kernel or running a fedora/mainline kernel. Patching isn't
easy because the reboot=pci feature is in the kernel 10 versions newer
than RHEL5.4 and there is significant divergence, and I'm not much of a
kernel developer. I'm not sure what trials lie with running a fedora
kernel.

I can't switch from RHEL because we have lots of commercial applications
that would not support ubuntu or fedora.

BTW, are there any guide or tool that help with upgrading the kernel in
the RHEL5 install? Alternatively, can I use a Fedora installer to
install RHEL5?

I'm look for any tools or information that might help. I'm wondering if
there are any solutions that I haven't thought of.

Is anyone else running a non-RHEL kernel on RHEL5? If so, what has been
your experience?

FYI, I confirmed that reboot=pci is the fix by using the Ubuntu Karmic
install/live CD. According to dmidecode, the iMac product name is
"iMac10,1".

Thanks,
Jason
