You can use remember= with pam_unix.  Something like this in
/etc/pam.d/system-auth will work.

password    sufficient    pam_unix.so md5 shadow nullok try_first_pass
use_authtok remember=5

Everything I Google up suggests to use "remember=X", but:

passwd: pam_cracklib(passwd:chauthtok): pam_parse: unknown option;
remember=5

I've updated to the latest pam.  What is the correct option for this?
