http://www.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/5.4/html-single/Release_Notes/ ext4 was introduced in RHEL 5.4 as a Tech Preview, ie, not everything will work and RH has no obligation of provide full support.
