I ran a very similar command (and put it in my previous reply on this
thread)... that ultimately led to me resolving the issue.

This would have shown the truth of the matter:
[r...@penguin ~]# rpm -q perl --qf '%{name} %{arch} \n'
perl x86_64
[r...@penguin ~]#

I went to some trouble on this system to ensure it's amd-64 only, but I 
have a couple of new systems, recently installed, where I took no such 
care and they are fully up to date, so maybe CentOS has fixed the 
problem. Or, I was lucky.
