That sounds like the 'firefox 3.6 doesn't work with vmware server 2' problem. Your options are

* Don't use firefox 3.6
* Hack at firefox 3.6 until it kind of works (not that easy)

Variations are:

Punch a VPN/SOCKS proxy tunnel through and don't use firefox 3.6.
Open the access to remote and don't use firefox 3.6

Failing that, can those virtual machines created under VMware Server v2
be migrated to an alternative hosting environment (e.g. KVM)?

Yes. I've done it a couple of times.
