John, hi. As a home user and admin who has dealt with way too many telelphone and network "modems", * ask: what tools are you using? And would it work better under KDE? Are you using NetworkManager (which I personally consider pointless bloatware), or other, more flexible tools that may have fewer knobs nad widgets?
