Have a read of Phillip K. Dick's "A Scanner Darkly", "Flow My Tears, The 
Policeman Said", or "VALIS".

This sounds very, very familiar to me, having read the aforementioned books - 
and he was in a shocked reaction to Tricky Dicky Nixon!

The more things change, the more they stay the same! ;)  I could weep ...
