[Lori is the daughter of a CUNY faculty family, Mark and Rhoda Berenson, who was doing volunteer work in Latin America. When she moved to Peru the building in which she was living on the ground floor had some men accused of being Tupac Amaru -- the lesser labor movement initiated 'terrorist' group that had been protesting the brutal Fujimori government -- living on the top floor. Lori was arrested and convicted of 'treason' by a masked secret military tribunal and then imprisoned in life threatening prison conditions -- bitter cold high up in the Andes -- which have affected her health. Her parents and many others, including our government under Clinton and many Congresspersons, have tried to free her. With the flight of Fujimori to Japan in the face of charges against him, the present Peruvian government has indicated it will release her when the Inter-American Court supports Lori's release, which it is expected it will do. Friday, November 12, 2004 To All Friends and Supporters of Lori Berenson: INTER-AMERICAN COURT TO TAKE UP LORI'S CASE NOV. 24 AND 25 The Inter-American Court of Human Rights announced that Lori's case will be the sixth and final case to be reviewed during its three-week session in San Jose, Costa Rica, that commences on November 15th. Lori's case will be discussed on November 24th and 25th. A decision from the Court may be rendered at that time, a few days after (since the Court is in session until December 4th), or the Court may postpone a decision until its next session. The Inter-American Court will also be reviewing the case of Dr. Maria Teresa de la Cruz Flores on November 17th and 18th. She has challenged Peru's revised anti-terrorism laws that were instituted during the current Toledo administration. Lori's case has challenged Peru's anti-terrorism laws that were developed in 1992-3 during the Fujimori-Montesinos administration.
