Dear NYC FBI:
I ride the IRT back and forth between Manhattan and Flatbush where I
teach at Brooklyn College. I read the signs on the subways that urge us
passengers to report any suspicious packages or activities and I am
seeing such every time I travel that I am now duly reporting to you.
The entrance to the Flatbush (Brooklyn College) IRT station which serves
both the East and West Side IRT trains (#2 and #5) through which I enter
used to have a clerk on duty during at least rush hours. Now the MTA
has removed that clerk's window so that anyone can enter through the
turnstile with whatever completely out of sight of anyone except fellow
travelers.
Having as a college student worked as an assistant in construction to a
blaster, I am well aware how much damage, say, 30 pounds of TNT, which
could be fitted into a pull along suitcase, could do if exploded
anywhere in a busy subway station. Imagine some terrorist type
assembling such along with a good supply of some poisonous stuff
(anthrax?) and dragging it into my station and then boarding a train and
leaving it with a timing device set to blow it, say, at Wall St. or
Times Square or Grand Central after he/she had pushed the proper button
prior to departing at the previous station?
I am writing to you *again* to protest the fact that:
1) you have no agents on duty to protect my station and fellow
passengers.
2) your bosses in Washington have cut back NYC anti-terrorist funding
so that we cannot even afford having police doing the guarding.
3) the MTA continues to remove eyes-on clerks from even more of our
subway stations.
All of the above strike me as suspicious activities putting us at high
risk as the prime U.S. terrorist target of today -- as we were on 9/11.
I have done my duty as a patriotic citizen here as urged by our subway
signs. I hope you do yours and spread the word. We had the good
fortune to have two potential bombers of our major Brooklyn transfer
station at Franklin Avenue through which I pass with many thousands of
others each day turned in by their third roommate just prior to 9/11.
But now the brutal incarcerations of such people by our Justice (?)
Department has presumably scared many potential anti-terrorists from
speaking out for fear of being arrested themselves as "material
witnesses" such as the 200 now locked up incommunicado in Queens!
Will look forward to hearing from you before it is too late. We have,
as you, know been warned to expect another big one soon. Remember
Madrid! Ed Kent
P.S. I am sending copies to various friends, journalists, and others.
