In Iraq last year when there was no phone network some enterprising Iraqis tried to fill thegap by starting a network based on satellites but the US controller squashed it. Guess who gets to rebuild the communications network? US contractors who are mates of Bush and his people.
And it gets even better- Iraq, as a nation, owes a huge sum of money to various nations (e.g., one billion to Australia is one I know of but that is a drop in the ocean compared to what is owed to other countries including the US, Germany and France). In the last two days Bush has prevailed upon the creditor countries to forgive the debts so that Iraq can rebuild - wonderful you say but what it really means is that taxpayers all over the world (inclduing the US) will pick up that tab for those debts and the Iraqis will be free to spend aid and oil money on reconstruction by who? By US contractors who are mates of Bush and his mates. Why not just ask the taxpayer to shell out direct to Haliburton etc (A Haliburton in which I understand Dick Cheney still has substantial shareholding) Oh - and we will all still be asked to fork out additional moneys in aid (yes, countries other than the US do have substantial foreign aid commitments) to help the reconstruction. So the financial gutting of Iraq for the benefit of the Haliburtons has an element of siphoning off moneys from everyone else to swell those profits.
