Hank, don't be offended but please don't talk to me about morality. I
belong to a people that is widely hated because we (1) killed God, (2)
spurned God's irritable Prophet, (3) invented capitalism, (4) schemed to
rule the world and (most recently) pose the Number One threat to world
peace. And I'm leaving out the part about how we poisoned the wells and
caused the plague and ate the little babies.
You want morality, then what's supposed to happen to all the people who
made up all these stupid lies about us, to say nothing of all the others
who acted on those lies and persecuted, tortured and murdered us?
Shouldn't they be punished? Whatever happened to an eye for an eye and the
sins of the fathers? Isn't that morality?
The sad truth is that there is no such thing as justice either in this
world or any other. Even if Israel was guilty of every single atrocity
against the Arabs that our enemies say we are, it wouldn't even begin to
compare with what the Arabs have done to us for the past 1300 years.
Justice for the Jews? The world has not even begun to contemplate what
that might actually entail, nor will it ever.
So instead of preaching to me about morality, please talk to me about
expediency. How much justice can we actually get away with? How much of
what is rightfully ours can we actually take? What is the best result that
we can achieve, seeing as we are a tiny, despised, tortured minority that
can't even go to shul to pray to a non-existent God without fear of getting
blown up? Leave morality to the moralists, i.e. those who are striving to
protect a privilege of one kind or another.
