If one digs below the surface one finds American workers being ripped off here, there, and elsewhere -- and even the protections of physical safety once reasonably secured are being torn away by deregulation of our corporations. Help! We are certainly seeing this first hand in the academic world where regular full-time jobs with tenure are being reduced as thruway travelers cover classes either as temporary subs or part-time adjuncts. I see the effects on workers -- both my students and colleagues each day I teach my courses -- stress, illnesses, fatigue, overwork, out-of-work anxieties -- and drop-outs from all of the above.
