I bought a copy of Bowling for Columbine (DVD) and my son and I watched it last night. It was very moving and informative and indeed leaves one with the question unanswered as to why we kill more than other societies? What is it that makes us worse (and really so bad)? I was in the army 8 years and I'm not sure we were worse soldiers though we were capable of all manner of atrocities and I knew that then (during Vietnam), and I knew the indoctrination was unique, as it must have been in other societies, so we would think we were the better than anyone else. I got that in military school and then again in the army. We were somehow different -- but I think others (on the other side, whatever that is) were taught to think the same thing? The film also left me with these feelings I once had about wanting to flee and move somewhere else, like France, where I was once stationed, because the people were lest hostile. We are 50 different states and maybe the idea of union or "melting pot" hasn't really caught on -- or can't? Maybe we need to miscengenate more than we have? Maybe we need to assimilate into a common fabric. Chia talks about minorities dominating a majority in her book and we do have a class system which is becoming more pronounced. There is a great deal of resentment for something and while I believe it to be the ruling elite which has so much more and controls policy, many in this country find blame elsewhere, some on Blacks and some on Jews, and others. Anyway I believe you do us all a great service with your films and I look forward to the next one which you mention on your site. Drop by sometime. Hank Roth (an activist since the late 60s) http://pnews.org/ <-------- By the way, there is a lot which is wrong with hating Bush so much that we can't vote for someone we want (I voted Nader in 2000 and he still speaks to those things I am concerned about) and must vote for someone like Kerry who I know we will hate (perhaps as much as Bush) if he continues this war and the policies of Clinton -- who destroyed welfare and as you point out in your film caused more misery than it ever cured -- and bombed Sudan and Kosovo.
